I feel like this is a true father who has suffered a horrible loss, and this is his way of expressing his feelings of regret that he couldn't be there for his son like he thought he should be, even though he knows that there was nothing he could do to save him this was his way of acting out what he really wanted to do to try and justify his loss. I also feel this was his way of trying to begin the healing process of suffering such a loss. No parent should have to bury their own child.
